What does PEMF therapy consist of and how long does it take?

There are many different types of Pulsed Electromagnetic Field (PEMF) therapy devices on the market today. Some are for daily home use and some are for use by health professionals in their practices. You can get devices that treat the entire body at once and ones that treat localised areas of the body.

It is preferable in many cases to treat the entire body as people get the most benefit from this. Sometimes it’s found that where an ache or pain is identified it is not necessarily where it originates within the body, for example, a back pain could be caused by a problem elsewhere in the body. So if you only treat where the pain is felt in your back you may not achieve the best results from your PEMF therapy device.

Full-body PEMF therapy systems come as a mat and vary in weight, size and appearance. Some are more portable than others and some can come as double and king size mattress toppers to go on top of your bed mattress. In some cases it may be more practical to simply treat the area of their body that needs therapy, which is where localised PEMF devices come in.

Localised devices are smaller than full-body devices and are often battery powered, making them convenient to use on the go. Localised devices used by health professionals are usually larger. The treatment process is virtually the same for localised and full-body systems but you can lie down on the full body systems, and with the localised ones you will need to place or strap them to the area of concern.

Typically PEMF therapy sessions consist of 2 sessions a day, preferably in the morning and evening for 30 minutes each time. If someone is in chronic pain it is best to do 3 sessions per day, morning, lunch and before bed. In the first 2 weeks its good to start on a low setting and build the therapy up, but you don’t have to.

For those using PEMF for sports and increased performance it would be recommended to use the therapy once prior to sport, once immediately after sport and once before bed for maximum recovery and performance. This allows your body to recover quicker allowing you to be back training in less time. During a sporting event your blood system will be maximised to carry oxygen to the areas needed to push us that much further.
