Osteoporosis Awareness Week – Can PEMF help?
Today is national Osteoporosis awareness day, ran by the Royal Osteoporosis Society. A day in which the aim is to raise awareness of the condition and the importance of bone health. Osteoporosis is a condition that causes the weakening of bones, which can then lead to a higher risk of breaking a bone. According to the NHS, 3 million people in the UK suffer from osteoporosis with many unaware that they have the condition until after they suffer a bone break.
There are many ways in which you can help to prevent the development of osteoporosis, regular exercise is essential, weight-bearing and resistance exercises are particularly important as they can help with improving bone density. Vitamin D is important for healthy bones as it can help your body absorb calcium, and calcium is very important for maintaining bone health.
How can PEMF therapy help those suffering? Well, although PEMF therapy isn’t condition-specific, there are benefits from PEMF that can be beneficial for those who are living with bone conditions such as osteoporosis. These benefits include: promoting the repair of cartilage, improving and increasing the transport and absorption of calcium in bones. Magnetic fields can heal long-standing fractures, The FDA has approved PEMF therapy for the healing of non-union fractures. A study on bone density changes in osteoporosis-prone women exposed to pulsed electromagnetic fields, by Tabrah F 1990, found that “Properly applied PEMFs, if scaled for whole-body use, may have clinical application in the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis”
