PEMF therapy for dogs by Veterinary Nurse & Canine Myotherapist Kirsty
I have been using and trialing different PEMF therapy products for the past 18 months in my capacity as a registered veterinary nurse and canine myotherapist.
The data I have collected from observing dogs during this period suggests that they seem to derive valuable benefit from PEMF technology. Following a treatment, my senior dog appears to move more freely and I personally believe PEMF helps to reduce the pain he experiences, from inflammation and restricted mobility associated with his age-related conditions.
From numerous observations over an 18 month period, I can say with confidence that my dog consistently falls asleep within minutes of the therapy starting and appears to go into a deep, relaxed, sleep period which extends well beyond the treatment time.
The PEMF mat has a generous amount of padding and is comfortable and easy to use. It is lightweight, hygienic, has a simply operated control panel and the product is easily stored.
The size of the mat was too small for my dog’s whole body – he is a large golden retriever-35kg- so the treatment application was limited to targeted areas of his body instead of whole body treatment. I found that when he was lying down asleep or in his bed, I was able to place the mat under him with relative confidence that he would stay in that position for the duration of the treatment. What was a little harder was encouraging him to sit on it when he was awake or active – however once on the mat and the treatment underway he always relaxed within minutes.
I believe PEMF therapy is a useful tool in the multimodal management of many conditions but I always recommend that my clients check with their vet before introducing PEMF into their pet’s treatment plan. This is simply to rule out any potential contraindications of use.
